OSCAR JAN HOOGLAND + ZEA
CHARLIE & THE LESBIANS

Space is the Place presents an evening of sizzling, cross-border music. The band Silverbones plays their mix of free jazz, punk, electronica and folk; Terrie Ex goes wild playing solo on his guitar, as well as John Dikeman on his tenor sax. ZEA + Oscar Jan Hoogland make their fat-free music without waste; cheerfully stubborn, wonderfully bonkers. Finally, the Dutch troublemakers of Charlie & the Lesbians are filthy, rude and in your face and are happy to show you all aspects of punk. And all that in one big party night!

SILVERBONES

SILVERBONES is a shapeshifting, Andean-Futurist multi-sensory sojourn. Using modular synthesisers, noisy guitar riffs, dark vocals, swaying bass lines and unpredictable drums, they diverge from an ordinary music concert into a focused happening. Their deep and personal chemistry weaves free jazz, punk, electronica, folk and physical theatre into a hypnotic sonic dream.
Drawing inspiration from their divergent geographical roots and artistic backgrounds from Bolivia, Chicago and Amsterdam, their sound defies categorisation. SILVERBONES isn’t simply a band, but a family who regard music as a potent force to bring light to earth— it is palpable in their music, apparent in their presentation.

TERRIE EX SOLO

Terrie Hessels started playing guitar when he co-founded The Ex in 1979. Actually coincidental; it was the instrument no one wanted to play. He played about 2000 concerts with The Ex.
In addition to all The Ex releases, he soon started improvising. From a few guitar solos on the Awara/Ex 7” in 1981, to recent tours with Han Bennink or improv groups Offonoff or LeanLeft (with Ken Vandermark, Andy and Paal Nilssen-Love). Terrie toured 21 African countries for a year, with Emma Fischer, in 1996. They started the TERP label in 2000 for his own improv projects and African music. Produced CDs with ao Tsehaytu Beraki, Getatchew Mekuria, Konono No.1 and Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed. (www.terprecords.nl)

ZEA + OSCAR JAN HOOGLAND

Oscar Jan Hoogland is the sound of Amsterdam incarnated. He plays the concert hall, the jazz venues, the rock ’n’ roll bars, the theaters, the art lofts and the underground basements. He is an instant composer, pianist and inventor of his own instrument by putting a clavichord on 220 Volt electricity.
Zea is a solo performance from Arnold de Boer (Amsterdam, NL) deploying guitar and sampler for an almighty bout of intense and high energy songs. Urgent lyrics over guitar, roughshod beats and grimy bass lines. Zea makes fat-free music with no words wasted; joyfully obstinate, wonderfully bonkers. For more than fifteen years Zea has been playing all over the world.
For his monthly Paradiso night Arnold invited Oscar Jan to come and play with his new band. It was the beginning of a series of invitations back and forth, between off kilter songwriting and improvisation, that still continues and that resulted in recording the album called Summing.

JOHN DIKEMAN SOLO

John Dikeman is an American saxophonist currently residing in Belgium & Amsterdam. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources, John’s playing runs the gamut of improvised music and technique. He is currently active as a member of numerous groups including Cactus Truck, a band made up of guitarist/bass guitarist Jasper Stadhouders and Onno Govaert; Universal Indians; the trio Dikeman, Parker, Drake with William Parker and Hamid Drake, and numerous other collaborations, such as the brass band the Zebra Street Band and cumbia project Bacchanalia.

CHARLIE & THE LESBIANS

Welcome into the chaotic, impetuous world of Charlie & the lesbians. A quartet that explores the edges of their genre to show you all aspects of punk. The Dutch troublemakers are filthy, rude and in your face. Looking for that one moment to express your frustrations? Charlie & the lesbians will gladly help you!
