OLD ADAM ON TURTLE ISLAND

Old Adam on Turtle Island is led by tenor saxophonist John Dikeman, who championed free jazz out of Amsterdam for years and is currently based in Ostend. For this band he composed a song cycle about colonization and the double-edged sword of religion. Expect deep emotion and interaction by top players from Amsterdam’s improv scene: pianist Marta Warelis, bassist Aaron Lumley and drummer Sun-Mi Hong. Their debut album appeared on the New York-based label Relative Pitch Records.

John Dikeman saxophone, Marta Warelis piano, Aaron Lumley bass, Sun-Mi Hong drums

g a b b r o

g a b b r o is a collective with a varying line-up led by Hanne De Backer, aimed at investigating the impact of improvised music on its surroundings and vice versa. For example, she has organized concerts and recordings at sewer canals, laundromats and even a prison. In 2024 she travelled from Brussels to the mysterious village of Gabbro in Italy. This led to the current line-up with guitarist Raphael Vanoli and drummer Casper Van De Velde. Field recordings and performances found their way on the album Groundspeed.

IMANE GUEMSSY

Imane Guemssy was the first woman to break the taboos surrounding the male-dominated Gnawa music genre by practicing it herself. She became a symbol of courage and determination. Guemssy combines traditional Gnawa with modern influences, without losing its essence. Her performance is a harmonious balance between singing and the guembri, a key instrument in Gnawa music. With her powerful, emotive voice, she succeeds in conveying deep emotions, touching the hearts of her audience, and redefining the musical landscape of her ancestral art.
