Spinvis & Saartje van Camp
Spinvis is perhaps the best that Dutch music has produced in the past two decades. With his characteristic voice and style, Erik de Jong makes beautiful, linguistic and poetic music. He has been working with Saartje van Camp, cellist, singer and Amsterdam-Noorderling, for years. As a duo, they kick off this edition of Wiel Klanken.
Marta Warelis solo
Pianist Marta Warelis is considered a great piano talent in the European jazz scene. For years she was a driving force in Amsterdam and recently she moved to Berlin to further develop herself there. In 2022, her first solo album was released on the well-known Relative Pitch Records label from New York. Last October, she presented her first own band at the Bimhuis. This afternoon she will play an improvised piano set in the beautiful church of Durgerdam.
Saturno Santos’ Something
An extroverted, curious band from the youngest generation of adventurous Amsterdam musicians led by Brazilian guitarist Gabriel de Oliveira. The music is a mix of jazz, pop and folk, with a collective punk ethos. With genuine magical thinking they explore the in-between space of songwriting and improvisation. Together with explosive grooves and subtle melodies a colourful ritual is cast.
Chen Har-Even, Niels Luteijn – drums | Zenzele Mthembu-Salter – bass | Chaerin Im – piano, keys | Alkistis Misouli – viola | Lezaam Beets – trombone | Helena Casella, Beatrice Sberna – oice | Gabriel de Oliveira – guitar, voice
Dakka Afrah
Expect extremely catchy music from this group of Moroccan musicians living in Amsterdam. Dakka Afrah is invited to all kinds of celebrations, you see and hear them especially during Moroccan weddings. The music is comprehensive. The most striking is Chaabi (شعبي in Arabic), which means ‘folk’. This refers to various music genres in North Africa such as Algerian Chaabi, Moroccan Chaabi and Egyptian Shaabi. The use of popular language and the creation of new rhythms have made this style an essential addition to the dance.
Ritmo Entertainment
This lively brass band consists mainly of young fanatic percussionists who perform at a huge diversity of events. What is striking is the indomitable cheerfulness in the solid drum violence based on Caribbean rhythms. Often there is a nod to contemporary pop music with which they get many cultures and ages moving. Just try to sit still: simply impossible.
Low Lands Highlife
Put on your dancing shoes with this impressive ensemble, initiated in Amsterdam-Noord, that takes Ghanaian highlife to a new level. Expect high-energy improvisation based on rousing Afrobeat grooves, brought by a colorful group of musicians from improv, jazz and various African and Caribbean music traditions.
Peter Somuah trumpet, Tobias Klein alto sax, John Dikeman tenor sax, Yorán Vroom drums, Bintou Kouyate percussion, Sekou Dioubate kora, Nathaniël Klumperbeek bass guitar, Niels Brouwer guitar, special guest Monica Akihary
Het project is mede mogelijk gemaakt door een subsidie voor eenmalige kunst- en cultuuractiviteiten van stadsdeel Noord, Amsterdam
