WHAT’S UP? MUSICIANS’ UPDATE #13

How is everybody doing in these anonymous and isolated times, without performances? A small tour along the (Amsterdam) improvised music scene to find out.

Ernst Glerum (bass, piano, composition)

How do you feel?

I feel good – happy with my family, sad but ok with the passing of my mother earlier this year, motivated in music, lucky with my teaching job, privileged with my backyard studio. Spring cleaning in progress, getting rid of a lot of essential stuff. Turns out not to be so essential after all. Change of perspectives.

How do you stay inspired?

Watching very inspiring videos the bass students send in; I admire their resilience in this frustrating period. Checking out hundreds of cassettetapes my mother left me with Michiel de Ruyter jazz radioprograms – Wendell Marshall plays so fantastic in Duke Ellington Trio!

Describe in 1 word or sound what it will be like for you when you can perform live with an audience again.

Grateful.
