This year’s SITProductions is the new project of Brazilian guitarist / composer/ band leader Gabriel de Oliveira: mundu lawaai.
Within the framework of SITProductions Gabriel developed a research between the Netherlands and their native Brazil, immersing themselves auto-ethnographically in traditional processions and soundsystems, performing with maracatu group Leão Misterioso, studying gamelan, tambú, kawina, and engaging in critical readings of the Jaap Kunst Archive and other musicological sources. They created a work for a six-piece ensemble that blends club culture, poetry, percussion and electronics.
In this work mundu lawaai seeks the sound of a global generation in electric song-beats that blend layered drums, live dub, and rapping. A decisively urban club band, their urgent noise reflects a need for collective improvisation facing post-coloniality and mass media consumption, and a reality where not even baile funk and Balinese gamelan can escape virtual dialogue.
mundu lawaai premiered at the Minimal Music Festival on April, 17 and it will have at least 4 more concerts (WORM, Cinetol, Garage Noord, Zenith & U Festival & more tba).
