MICHAEL MOORE
Masterful reeds player, praised for his unparalleled tone and stylistic flexibility, from melodic and lyrical to obstinate. Everything hits the spot.

TRIO SORPRESA

Will it be free improv, will it be cumbia, will it be both, one thing for sure: this will be something. Three of our most favorite, versatile and headstrong musicians form a trio especially for this night: Marta Warelis, Miguel Petruccelli and Tristan Renfrow.

ROMPERAYO
Romperayo is a musical journey through Colombian tropical folklore of the second half of the 20th century, a mischievous and modern interpretation of the up-tempo rhythms of “Descarga” and the psychedelic sounds of ’70s cumbia. Romperayo is distinguished by the prominence of the rhythm section, probably because the band was formed by the “capitán” of the new generation of Colombian percussionists: drummer Pedro Ojeda, who also plays in Los Pirañas, Palanca, CieloMama, Frente Cumbiero, Ondatrópica and Mucho Indio. Eblis Alvarez (from the world-renowned Meridian Brothers and Los Pirañas) tweaks samplers and electronics, organ and piano virtuoso Ricardo Gallo plays the synths, and well-known double-bassist and composer Juan Manuel Toro is on the electric bass. By cleverly incorporating urban sounds and sampling techniques into the tropical music of the past decades, Romperayo embodies Colombia’s modern folklore scene.

EL TERROR DEL MAMBO

Combining the most obscure and improbable samples from his extensive record collection with his renown percussion skills, unusually syncopated drum machine patterns and a vast plethora of synth noises, Amsterdam’s own Tropical music maverick, Alex Figueira, presents his latest solo incursion, this time delving into the annals of electronic music, with the same adventurous, experimental and irresistibly groovy approach of all his many other projects. Expect all your musical preconceptions to be torn apart after being exposed to the truly unutterable rhythms that will come out of his computer.

DJ ALEX FIGUEIRA

Alex Figueira is a Venezuelan-Portuguese musician, producer, DJ and record collector based in Amsterdam, known in independent music circuits as “the hardest working man in Tropical music”. It’s no hyperbole; Figueira is the founder of tropical psych-punk outfit Fumaca Preta, Afro-Caribbean psychedelic sensations Conjunto Papa Upa, the legendary record shop VintageVoudou Records, and tropical experimental label Music With Soul.

DJ Awet
The evening will be closed with a homage to our host Semai: DJ Amet wil spin energetic, highly danceable Ethiopian and Eritrean tunes.
