LINE-UP

ZEA + OSCAR JAN

Oscar Jan Hoogland is the sound of Amsterdam incarnated. He plays the concert hall, the jazz venues, the rock ’n’ roll bars, the theaters, the art lofts and the underground basements. He is an instant composer, pianist and inventor of his own instrument by putting a clavichord on 220 Volt electricity.

Zea is a solo performance from Arnold de Boer (Amsterdam, NL) deploying guitar and sampler for an almighty bout of intense and high energy songs. Urgent lyrics over guitar, roughshod beats and grimy bass lines. Zea makes fat-free music with no words wasted; joyfully obstinate, wonderfully bonkers. For more than fifteen years Zea has been playing all over the world.

For his monthly Paradiso night Arnold invited Oscar Jan to come and play with his new band. It was the beginning of a series of invitations back and forth, between off kilter songwriting and improvisation, that still continues and that resulted in recording the album called Summing.

ADA RAVE SOLO

Ada Rave is an Argentinian saxophonist, improviser and composer. Ada’s instrumental approach is based on research into a wide variety of techniques, conventional and unorthodox, which allow her to create a highly personal narrative in real time composition. In 2013, she decided to move to Europe to explore the rich field of free improvisation scenes. Based in Amsterdam she immediately integrated the improvised music community. She’s performed throughout Europe solo and with her trio, as well as in various projects including Hearth, the Kaja Draksler Octet and The Ex. Ada is also active as a music educator and organizer of the series Impro Jam at De Ruimte. Since September 2019 she is part of the internationally acclaimed DOEK collective.

PETER ZEGVELD / WOLTER WIERBOS

Peter Zegveld is a visual artist and theater maker. His theater performances are visual, sensory and cinematic. Due to his enormous freedom and unconventional attitude, Zegveld walks criss-cross through various disciplines and allows the viewer to experience and discover absurdities. In addition to performances for theatres, festivals and his autonomous visual art, he has also made productions for Orkater and television series for the VPRO.

For trombonist Wolter Wierbos, it’s all about fluidity: of tone, and time, of line and strategy and setting. It’s been said he can sound like a whole Ellington trombone section, from plunger-muted ya-yas to gorgeous melody statements, to dark shadings in the corners. He improvises free-associative solo concerts that suggest still more avenues to investigate. Even in composed music, he may improvise—might make up a better trombone line than the one written for him. No wonder he’s a 30-year linchpin of Misha Mengelberg’s ICP Orchestra, where the players are always re-arranging the tunes. But he’ll always nail a part if the harmonies depend on it.

Peter Zegveld and Wollo have been working on a mutual project during the last year with some impressive machinery & sounds, and are ready to roll!
