The paths of the musicians involved in this quartet have crossed many times in the past. This concert will bring them together under the same roof to explore and experiment.. It is a powerful thing when strong personalities meet to improvise.

RODRIGO AMADO
Rodrigo Amado is back at De Ruimte – the renowned Portuguese saxophone player and photographer, very active in the European improv scene. He collaborates internationally with other free jazz musicians like Luís Lopes, the González brothers, Gerald Cleaver, Taylor Ho Bynum, next to his own formations, such as his This is our Language Quartet with Joe McPhee, Kent Kessler and Chris Corsano and the Humanization 4tet, which performed at De Ruimte last year.

Together with his brothers, Pedro and Carlos Costa, Rodrigo Amado started the Clean Feed label, currently considered one of the most important jazz labels in the world. Amado’s photos are often used for the art work of the label.

POOR ISA
Frederik Leroux and Ruben Machtelinckx are both active members of the thriving Belgian jazz scene. They play in various and changing formations, for example with clarinetist and saxophonist Joachim Badenhorst.

Since 2019 Leroux and Machtelinckx work together under the name Poor Isa, with which they released two mesmerizing albums on Aspen Editions.

MARTA WARELIS SOLO

Pianist Marta Warelis (1986) is a vibrant performer with a strong preference for improvisation and experimentation in all genres. She continually aims for instant composing on the basis of new sounds and influences. Her work draws inspiration from music across the globe including cumbia, Angolan dance music, as well as jazz, western classical music and the various schools of free improvisation.

Tonight she will present her first solo album A Grain of Earth.
