SITP presents Impro Jam at De Tanker

Monday, 20 April | 21:00 h
De Tanker | Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg 15, Amsterdam

For many years De Ruimte hosted the marvellous Impro Jam series: a meeting point to explore free improvisation and experimental music through collaboration, curiosity, and spontaneous music-making. Initiated in 2014 by saxophonist Ada Rave, each event starts with an initial group of artists, then other musicians are welcome to join with
their instrument and jam on stage!

We’re happy to announce that we’ll host a new nomadic season of Impro Jams, touching base in different venues in Amsterdam and Utrecht. This evening at De Tanker is the second in the row.

Marcus Wärnheim

Marcus is a Swedish alto saxophonist based in Amsterdam, active as a performer in the local and international underground. His artistic output is primarily based in a genuine curiosity of sound, which he works with through intense listening and a thorough research of the physical possibilities of his instrument. In recent years he has been preoccupied with acoustic solo performances, improvisational meetings, interpretation of other’s compositions as a sideman, as well as trans-disciplinary collaborations with dancers and circus artists.

Gabriel de Oliveira

Improviser-songwriter Gabriel (Brasília, 2001) juggles guitar, singing, woodwinds, performance and cultural organizing practices. Throughout the last years, they have been in transit between the Netherlands and Brazil – simultaneously heading KB_, an Amsterdam collective nourishing new globalized scenes, and bands including anti-pop Saturno Santos’ Something and avant duo BRIGADERA, with a 2025 LP via Jipo Records.
Their research and vision is informed by urban life, “folk” mystery, and working with the likes of Maracatu Leão Misterioso, Wendy Eisenberg, Oscar Jan Hoogland, Mbé, and Ben Lamar Gay, among others.

Luc Ex

“Dutch acoustic bass player Luc Ex was a original member of the punk/rock band THE EX. Since leaving the band in 2003 he has become a force for creative music-making and improvisation, driven by his punk roots and the Dutch experimental music scene”
– by Ottawa Jazz festival 2017.

Thomas Jaspers

Drummer and installation-builder Thomas Jaspers is a versatile musician and mainly active in the Dutch improvisation and avant-garde music scene.
He works with bands like Lukraak, tatatacouF & the Big Kiss. Besides drums he also works with percussion instruments, found objects, contact microphones and flutes. With Tamar Blom he is working on an installation for big bass drums standing on feet, being played by vibrators.
He is also a committed climate activist and campaigns against deep-sea mining with the grindcore band The Polymetallic Nodules.
