Independent artistic collective KB_ joins Lokaal & SITP for a collaborative event at Plantage Dok, presenting: live performances by Kawina ensemble Yakua and Phantom Wizard, the documentary Tra Fasi about the Surinam punk scene, and a closing DJ set by Pedro da Mata.
KB_ is an independent artistic collective based in Amsterdam, focused on nourishing new globalized scenes protagonized by immigrating and queer artists through sonic, visual, and performatic production. Fostering emerging multicultural voices with attention to the margins of the dutch scene and the Global South, KB_ invests efforts on organizing live music events, recordings, and DIY art practices in community.
Yakua
Exciting 11-piece band led by Gerard Doorson with an uplifting mix of powerful percussion and rich vocal melodies. For 18 years, Yakua have been an important voice in the Surinam music scene. The band is known for their powerful Kaskawi and rousing Kawina, but also plays other Surinamese music styles such as Samboera and Lala music. Within the rhythm section you hear instruments like the skratjie, hari, bangi, koti, sek seki and timbal. With their energy and strong sound, they get every audience moving.
TRA FASI
Tra Fasi is a short documentary (2026, 20 min) directed by Charity Charly, which explores Suriname’s hidden alternative punk and rock scene. The film follows musician and artist Shavero Ferrier in his attempt to build a creative underground culture in Paramaribo.
Director Charity Charly will be present at Plantage Dok and give an introduction to the documentary.
PHANTOM WIZARD
Phantom Wizard is a composer and improviser whose work dissolves boundaries and reimagines traditions.
Rather than controlling sound, he attempts to guide it. Nurturing a space where multiple truths can coexist. This principle is the core of ‘Fribari’, a sonic philosophy.
Phantom Wizard blends natural soundscapes, the sonorities of Afro-diasporic music, experimental electronics and the many ancient traditions sourced from the Surinamese melting pot.
We are closing the night with Pedro da Mata, a Brazilian DJ rooted in underground club culture, guided by Brazilian/Afro/Latin rhythms. His sets move around heavy bass, percussive and hypnotic grooves, with baile funk standing out as a defining element of his hybrid style, while house and subgenres also play a central role in his performances.
