INGOMA YESINTU
JAMES MCCLURE / JOÃO GUERRA

After their magical debut at the SITP x Cinetol Spring Fest and before heading to the Music Meeting Festival with us in Nijmegen, here’s another chance to catch Ingoma Yesintu live–the band and vocal choir led by South African, Amsterdam-based artist Zenzele Mthembu-Salter.

Music Meeting Festival takes place 7–9 june and cuts across styles, genres and cultures, worldwide–offering a stage to artists all over the globe for over 35 year often with new projects or in special compositions.

Support comes from the amazing musicians: South-African trumpet player James McClure & the Portugese drummer João Guerra – who also play together in James McClure’s band Sofaya, just as Zenzele does.

Timetable:
15:15–15:45 | James McClure / João Guerra
16:00–17:00 | Ingoma Yesintu

Ingoma Yesintu

Ingoma Yesintu—meaning Song of Humanity or Folk Song in isiZulu—is led by bassist-composer Zenzele Mthembu-Salter, who writes and arranges the music of this a cappella ensemble with a firm focus on voices. With subtlety and grace, it features six singers, double bass, and percussion, centering on vocal harmonies with South African grooves and rhythms. The choir is made up of talented locally based Conservatorium vocalists from all across the world, drawing inspiration from African gospel choirs, classical chorales, traditional chants, jazz, and free improvisation.

JAMES MCCLURE & João Guerra

South-African trumpet player James McClure & Portugese drummer João Guerra are musicians of the same new generation of the Amsterdam improv scene, bringing about new influences and styles. They play together in James McClure’s band Sofaya and open the afternoon as a duo, doing improvisations influenced by jazz and other music.
